Here’s why BetterDiscord isn’t working for you.
BetterDiscord has recently pushed an update which changes some aspects of it which I’m not completely sure of. What I do know is that this update has been conflicting with some plugin libraries and causing you to crash upon some actions (Going all the way up to crashing upon loading). I will also note that this is NOT Discord intentionally blocking BetterDiscord as they very frankly do not care about people using it (Mainly because there’s no money involved). This should clear everything up but comment below if you need any more help.
Please read the edits (Bottom of post) for more information if you’re still having trouble.
The easiest fix for this is to remove your plugins from your file explorer. I have listed instructions for doing this on MacOS and Windows below.
- Quit Discord from your dock by right-clicking it and pressing ‘Quit’ from the list that appears.
- Open ‘Finder’ from your dock.
- Press ⌘+⇧+G (Command+Shift+G).
- Paste in ~/Library/Application Support/BetterDiscord/plugins to the box that appears and press enter.
- Look for any files that look anything like ‘PluginLibrary.plugin.js’ or anything you know is a library.
- Delete the files and re-open Discord.
- Quit Discord by focusing on the Discord window and pressing Alt+F4
- Open the ‘Run’ menu by pressing Win+R on your keyboard
- Paste in appdata in the ‘Open’ textbox inside the window that appears.
- Press the button labeled ‘OK’ in the window.
- Navigate to the folder labeled ‘BetterDiscord’ inside the file explorer window that appears.
- Once in the ‘BetterDiscord’ folder, navigate to the folder labeled ‘plugins’.
- Once inside, look for files that look anything like ‘PluginLibrary.plugin.js’ or anything you know is a library.
I hope that this has helped any of you in understanding and fixing the recent issues found after the latest update. Just remember Discord will likely never ‘block’ BetterDiscord because there’s absolutely no reason to.
Edit: This fix will not work for everyone, and there are definitely other problems happening that I am not aware of, but I assure you that this is one of the steps to solving the problems. Thank you for the support though, it’s really cool to see a 100% upvote rate, especially on a support post.
Edit 2: I would like to refer those of you that still cannot boot up BetterDiscord to this comment on the BetterDiscord Github page which has a fix that I even used myself but forgot about. Thank you to u/424c414e4b for replying to this message.
