IBM, leading American computer manufacturer, with a major share of the market both in the United States and abroad. Its headquarters are in Armonk, New York.

It was incorporated in 1911 as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company in a consolidation of three smaller companies that made punch-card tabulators and other office products. The company assumed its present name in 1924 under the leadership of Thomas Watson, a man of considerable marketing skill who became general manager in 1914 and had gained complete control of the firm by 1924. Watson built the then-floundering company into the leading American manufacturer of punch-card tabulating systems used by governments and private businesses. He also developed a highly disciplined and competitive sales force that adapted the company’s custom-built tabulating systems to the needs of particular customers.

In 1933 IBM purchased Electromatic Typewriters, Inc., and thereby entered the field of electric typewriters, in which it eventually became an industry leader. During World War II, IBM helped construct several high-speed electromechanical calculators that were the precursors of electronic computers. But the firm refrained from producing these electronic data-processing systems until Watson’s son, Thomas Watson, Jr., became president of the company in 1952 and sponsored an all-out push into that field. Having entered the computer field, IBM’s size allowed it to invest heavily in development. This investment capability, added to its dominance in office-calculating machines, its marketing expertise, and its commitment to repair and service its own equipment, allowed IBM to quickly assume the predominant position in the American computer market. By the 1960s it was producing 70 percent of the world’s computers and 80 percent of those used in the United States.

The IBM Personal Computer (PC) was introduced in 1981.

IBM’s specialty was mainframe computers—i.e., expensive medium- to large-scale computers that could process numerical data at great speeds. The company did not enter the growing market for personal computers until 1981, when it introduced the IBM Personal Computer. This product achieved a major share of the market, but IBM was nevertheless unable to exercise its accustomed dominance as a maker of personal computers. New semiconductor-chip–based technologies were making computers smaller and easier to manufacture, allowing smaller companies to enter the field and exploit new developments such as workstations, computer networks, and computer graphics. IBM’s enormous size hindered it from responding rapidly to these accelerating rates of technological change, and by the 1990s the company had downsized considerably. In 1995 IBM purchased Lotus Development Corporation, a major software manufacturer.

In 2002 IBM sold its magnetic hard drive business for $2.05 billion to the Japanese electronics firm of Hitachi, Ltd. Under the terms of the sale, IBM agreed to continue producing hard drives with Hitachi for three years in a joint venture known as Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. In 2005 Hitachi took full control of the joint venture and IBM stopped building a device that it had invented in 1956. In December 2005 IBM sold its personal computer division to the Lenovo Group, a major Chinese manufacturer. In addition to cash, securities, and debt restructuring, IBM acquired an 18.9 percent stake in Lenovo, which acquired the right to market its personal computers under the IBM label through 2010. With these divestitures, IBM shifted away from manufacturing so-called commodity products in order to concentrate on its computer services, software, supercomputer, and scientific research divisions.

Since 2000, IBM has placed one of its supercomputers consistently at or near the top of the industry’s list of most powerful machines as measured by standardized computation tests. In addition to producing supercomputers for governments and large corporations, IBM’s supercomputer division, in cooperation with the Toshiba Corporation and the Sony Corporation of Japan, designed the Cell Broadband Engine. Developed over a four-year period beginning in 2001, this advanced computer chip has multiple applications, from supercomputers to Toshiba high-definition televisions to the Sony Playstation 3 electronic game system. IBM also designed the computer chips for the Microsoft Corporation Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Company Wii game systems. IBM became the first company to generate more than 3,000 patents in one year (2001) and, later, more than 4,000 patents in one year (2008). The company now holds more than 40,000 active patents, which generate considerable income from royalties.

IBM Cloud

Though IBM had first experimented with virtualization technologies of computing in 1960s, its real intent and interest to go bigger in the industry was displayed when IBM acquired Softlayer in 2013. This was the time when Cloud seemed to be the next big future. Softlayer was then a reputed company in areas of dedicated server, managed web hosting and cloud computing. Now, Softlayer infrastructure and its resources, skills, capabilities forms the foundation of IBM Cloud. With its own managed data centers around the globe in different locations, IBM Cloud directly competes with the likes of Amazon Web Services (AWS), Rackspace, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud.

IBM Cloud Data Center Locations

IBM Cloud has around 60 data centers in 10+ countries including federal and CMS data centers. You can use these infrastructure and facilities to deploy and scale your virtual private server (VPS). Besides, it has network point of presence (PoP) in additional locations. These IBM data centers are spread across 6 of the IBM self-assigned geographical divisons with multiple facilities. IBM has divided its data center locations available for public selection into 6 divisions, classified as:

  • NA West: It includes data centers in San Jose
  • NA South: It includes data centers in Dallas, Houston and Mexico
  • NA East: It includes data centers in Montreal, Toronto and Washington
  • South America: It includes data centers in Sao Paulo

Australia has four IBM data centers in two locations in the cities of Sydney and Melbourne. Besides, it has network point of presence (PoP) in Perth.

There are IBM cloud data centers in two locations of China i.e. Beijing and Hong Kong. Only facility at Hong Kong is available for rest of the world.


There is undisclosed data center facilities in Beijing which is available for cloud services in China only. People outside of China can’t access to this IBM Cloud data center infrastructure located in Beijing.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong is one of the autonomous city of China. This host one of the data center of IBM, termed as:

Sao Paulo

Sao Paulo is another hot-spot for major data center companies in the world. This location host most of the facilities in Latin America. It has one IBM Cloud infrastructure. It is soon expected to have multi-zone region (MZR) here.

Muti-Zone Regions, Single Zone Regions and Data Centers

IBM Cloud has also classified its data centers and availability zones into Multi-zone regions (MZR), single zone regions (SZR) and other data centers. In Multi zone regions, 3 or more zones are there which are independent from each other. It ensures single failure events affect only a single zone. Deploying your application in Multi-zone region increases the availability to 99.99% from 99.9%.

«Win» — это клавиша, которая есть на клавиатуре любого IBM PC-совместимого компьютера или ноутбука. Впервые она появилась в середине 90-х гг. прошлого века вместе с выходом новой на тот момент операционной системы виндовс 95.

Мало кто знает, но правильно называть эту кнопку «Win», а не «Windows». Она имеет схожее с операционной системой наименование, но не повторяет его. Она унаследована название ОС в сокращенном виде, что облегчает написание инструкций, когда необходимо нажимать сочетание клавиш, содержащих «Win». «Win + R» — короче и проще для понимания, чем «Windows + R».

Дизайн и расположение этой функциональной кнопки практически не изменились со времен ее создания. Данные параметры регламентируются корпорацией «Майкрософт». И практически все современные производители клавиатур или ноутбуков добавляют «Win» на свои устройства и периферию.

К сведению! Кнопки «Windows» нет в ноутбуках IBM ThinkPad до серии T6x, а также в ряде других современных машинах, которые не заточены для работы под управлением операционных систем от компании «Майкрософт».

Перед тем как рассмотреть, где кнопка «Виндовс» на клавиатуре персонального компьютера или ноутбука, следует подробнее узнать о ее прошлом и настоящем. На самом деле, это нововведение сильно критиковали в середине 90-х гг., так как при ошибочном нажатии на нее фокус ввода текста терялся, и продолжить работу без лишних действий было невозможно.

К тому же даже виндовс 95 и 98 неправильно поддерживают эту клавишу при работе с DOS-приложениями. Иногда она залипает, и окно приложения просто не реагирует ни на какие действия. Решалось это простым нажатием любой незадействованной комбинацией, например, «Win + Z». Полноэкранные компьютерные игры обычно переопределяют функцию «Win», поэтому ее нажатие редко сворачивает их.

Также расположение Win и ее внешний вид — это не открытый стандарт. Изображение флажка «Майкрософт» является далеко не нейтральным по отношению к другим операционным системам. Так, на клавиатурах некоторых ноутбуков, заточенных под работу под управлением другой ОС, эта кнопка может называться «Meta» или «Super» (обычно это характерно для линукс), а изображение ее может меняться от домиков и символов до масконов, используемых операционных систем.

Пришло время узнать, где на клавиатуре клавиша «Виндовс». Обычно она находится в левой нижней части прибора на самом нижнем ряду между клавишами «Ctrl» и «Alt». Также вторая «Вин» может находиться в правой стороне клавиатуры около стрелок управления между «Alt» и «Menu» (контекстное меню или замена правой клавиши мыши). Найти ее на любом устройстве, выпущенном даже в 90-х гг. крайне просто из-за ее специфического внешнего вида.

Обратите внимание! В ряде клавиатур эта кнопка красится в другой цвет или получает обрамление, а некоторые производители делают ее круглой или более выпуклой. Касается это, как правило, только левого варианта. Правый редко чем-то выделяется среди остальных клавиш.
