Tesla Model 3 12V Battery: Everything You Need to Know

Isn’t the Model 3, or any Tesla for that matter, a massive battery in itself? And if it is, what’s the need for a 12V battery?

If such questions are crossing your mind, you’re in the right place.

The quick answer is that even though EVs themselves are massive batteries, there are many processes (powering lights, etc.) necessary for the proper running of the car that require a 12V battery.

After going through forums, Tesla manuals, and several YouTube videos, I’ve compiled this quick guide that’ll teach you all about the Tesla Model 3 12V battery and what functions it performs.

We’ll also go through some common problems related to the 12V battery that owners faced and what they did to get rid of them.

Does the Tesla Model 3 Have a 12V Battery – And Where Is It?

Like all other models of Tesla (Y, S, X), the Model 3 also comes up with a 12V battery. All you have to do is pop up the frunk, and there you’ll have access to it.

At this point, most new owners will ask, “Why does Tesla require a 12V Battery even though it itself is a massive battery?”

Here is how power gets distributed in your Tesla Model 3:

Tesla Main Battery:

  • Provides powertrain
  • Provides energy for air conditioner and cabin heater
  • DC-DC charging of 12V battery

Tesla 12V Secondary Battery:

  • Powers lights, media unit, windows, locks, etc.
  • Provides energy backup when the main battery starts dying! If the primary battery fails while you’re driving, this 12V battery supplies enough power for the car to safely steer and brake to a safe spot

Before we delve into the comparison, it’s important to note that the chemistry of Tesla’s 12V batteries seemingly changed from lead-acid to lithium-ion on the Model 3/Y recently.

With that aside, let’s do a side-by-side comparison of both batteries from different perspectives:

Cost

To begin with, lead-acid batteries are significantly less expensive than lithium-ion batteries in the short term, but over the length of the battery’s life span, lithium-ion batteries look like a more feasible option.

Weight

When it comes to electric vehicles, shaving weight is necessary as it directly relates to car efficiency.

Now if we compare both batteries side by side in terms of weight, the lead-acid battery is insanely heavy. A lead-acid battery weighs approximately 325+ pounds, while a lithium-ion battery weighs around 75 pounds.

And since it’s lightweight, the lithium-ion battery certainly increases your car’s efficiency by three to four times, which certainly is a big deal.

Maintenance Overview

Lithium-ion batteries are literally maintenance-free; yes, they don’t require maintenance at all.

However, lead-acid batteries are an absolute bummer. They require frequent maintenance in terms of:

  1. Watering (you have to keep optimum water levels)
  2. Corrosion cleanup (check if they are clean so the charge terminals don’t get corroded after some time)
  3. Monitoring the discharge limits (keep a check that they don’t fall by the 50% charge limit)

Well, it’s a hell of a lot of work to do, isn’t it? Lithium-ion batteries certainly suit you the best if you’re a lazy bum.

Self-Discharge Rate

Well, it’s a little bit technical, so instead of boring you with lengthy deets, let’s cut it short: Internal reactions within the batteries make them lose charge over time and ultimately reduce their capacity.

The self-discharge rate of a lead-acid battery is 33%, which is no doubt enormous. However, in the case of lithium-ion batteries, self-discharge varies between 2% and 3% and if you leave them unplugged for almost a season.

Lifetime Cycles

Even the best lead-acid batteries have a cycle span of 500–1,000 cycles, and if you’re frequently tapping into your battery bank, that could mean that your batteries may need a replacement within a year or two.

On the contrary, lithium-ion batteries come up with a cycle span of around 5,000 cycles, thus providing five times more longevity than an ordinary lead acid battery.

Charge Time

Lead-acid batteries generally require about 8–10 hours for a 100% charge, whereas lithium-ion batteries require a minimum charge time of 2–3 hours.

Where to Buy a Tesla Model 3 12V Battery? Is There Any Aftermarket Replacement Available?

The Tesla OEM 12V battery comes with a four-year or 50,000 miles warranty. So if your battery dies within warranty, you are highly recommended not to buy a new battery as you can get it replaced for free at any nearby Tesla service center.

In other cases, you can either go to a Tesla service center and get your battery replaced or go for aftermarket options.

But for the sake of this article, I’ll only share that yes, there are companies such as Ohmmu which are pretty popular in the Tesla community that offer OEM 12V battery replacements.

While the products are undoubtedly great, they don’t work well with Tesla.

No, no… Not the car. The whole company!

How to Replace a 12V Battery in Tesla Model 3?

Tools You’ll Need

  • 10 mm wrench/ratchet
  • 12V battery
  • Gloves

Steps:

  1. Start by opening the frunk.
  2. Keep a door or a window open to avoid yourself getting stranded.
  3. Shut down your automobile fully using the touch screen (Menu > Security & Safety > Power Off).
  4. The rear seat has a clip on both sides. Unlock them (two clips) and lift the passenger side seat.
  5. Before your eyes, a dark cover will appear. Take it out (tools not required).
  6. You will notice a rectangular clip underneath their release and let it drop to the side.
  7. Return to the frunk and unscrew the upper lid. Be cautious since some clips can easily burst and shatter.
  8. Remove the vent cover to gain access to the 12-volt battery.
  9. Remove the bolt from the top using two supporting bars.
  10. You’ll see that the negative side is first (in black), followed by the positive (red).
  11. Remove the battery after disconnecting everything.
  12. Connect the +ve and -ve of the new Ohmmu battery using adapters. (Adapters are included with the battery.)
  13. Tighten the bolts and support bars after installing the new battery in the rack.
  14. Put on the positive (red) first and then the negative (black).
  15. Following this section, your Tesla will make a whirring noise.
  16. Reinstall all the vent and backseat covers precisely.
  17. Insert the high-voltage plug again and cover it.
  18. Set the seats back in place.

Common Tesla Model 3 12V Battery Issues – and How to Solve Them

Even though all vehicles (electric and non-electric) have a 12V auxiliary battery, batteries used in Teslas have a greater tendency of dying out early.

Model 3 owner jcanoe had very interesting insights on the subject matter:

The things that cause a 12V lead-acid battery to fail prematurely are load, heat, vibration and time. You can monitor the voltage of the 12V system from the 12V accessory port with a voltmeter or a USB adapter with a built in voltmeter (under $10).

At some point Tesla reprogrammed the charging routine for the 12V battery as they were probably overcharging the 12V batteries and causing the 12V batteries to fail. This change may have helped extend the life of the 12V battery.

As Tesla was continuously trying to fix the rapidly dying 12V battery issue, they were observed getting rid of it with the help of a software update as mentioned in the above comment, but it didn’t turn out as expected.

But then Elon Musk, in an interview with Sandy Munro, confirmed that they have finally moved all Tesla models to a lithium-ion battery to nip this issue in the bud for forever.

We’re finally transitioning to a Li-ion 12-volt battery. It has way more capacity and the cycle life matches the main battery pack. We should have done that before, but it’s great that we are doing it now.

Though some minor glitches of Li-ion battery were claimed by some Tesla owners in Europe (having the LFP Model 3), causing it to die really soon just like lead-acid batteries and leaving the vehicle stranded and undrivable.

Since it’s new in the system as of this writing, it will be really early to claim any malfunctioning Li-ion batteries.

What happens if a Tesla 12V battery dies?

Tesla’s 12V auxiliary battery is responsible for powering up cars’ sensitive electronics like lights, indicators, computers, locks, sensors, etc.

If, by any chance, your 12v battery dies out while you’re on a drive, all car systems will cease immediately, and you’ll be stuck. You won’t be able to charge your Tesla’s main battery too.

How much does a Tesla Model 3 12V battery cost?

If the warranty of your Model 3 hasn’t expired, the cost to replace the 12-volt battery will be $0 as it’s covered under warranty. But if your warranty has expired, expect to pay anywhere around $150 to $300.

I can’t give an exact number as the 12V battery replacement cost depends on several factors such as the type of your car (LR, SR+, Performance), the area you’re living in, etc.

Can I replace Tesla’s 12V battery myself?

Yes, you can replace Tesla’s 12V battery yourself.

If you are at home and have all the equipment available, you can easily replace your car’s battery. All you have to do is simply follow the step-by-step guide I have elaborated above.

But if your battery goes dead while you’re cruising on the road, you don’t have enough options left but to call Tesla roadside assistance.

How to provide a jump-start to flat Tesla 12V batteries?

Simply follow these steps to jump-start your Tesla:

  1. Get a 12V battery or access a 12V charging station ASAP.
  2. To allow the 12V systems to start up, connect a 12V jumper or charger to the 12V battery.
  3. To avoid any difficulties, we recommend charging the 12V battery for at least five minutes before attempting to do anything with the car, including charging it.
  4. Connect the vehicle to a vehicle charger or the UMC.
  5. Avoid using fast chargers; the charge rate is going to be real slow in the beginning.
  6. Charge the automobile to a reasonable level and then charge freely on whatever charger you like.

Note: This is a matter of last resort. Don’t rely on this fix. You are advised to keep your main battery charged to an adequate level.

The low voltage lead-acid battery for North American vehicles is AtlasBX / Hankook 85B24LS 12V 45Ah. You can purchase a new lead-acid low voltage battery that is compatible with your vehicle from your local service center

Vehicles manufactured between approximately July 2017 and October 2020 do not have a heat pump and should use Vehicles Manufactured Before Approximately October 2020. Vehicles manufactured afterward have a heat pump and should use Vehicles Manufactured After Approximately October 2020.

Perform the following procedure to replace the lead-acid low voltage battery. Wear appropriate personal protection equipment (such as safety glasses, leather gloves when handling the lead-acid battery etc.).

Vehicles Manufactured Before Approximately October 2020

Removal:

  1. Prepare the vehicle to remove the low voltage lead-acid battery:
    1. Ensure the vehicle is in Park.
    2. Lower all windows.
    3. Open the front trunk.
    4. Leave a door propped open so you can get back into the vehicle if needed.
    5. Disconnect the charge cable from the charge port.
  2. Move the driver and front passenger seat fully forward.

    Inspect the new low voltage lead-acid battery to ensure it is equipped a red plug on the positive (+) terminal side. If the new low voltage battery does not have a red plug, use a small trim tool transfer the red plug from the old battery to the new one.

    12В АКБ

    Видел много информации по поводу 12 В аккуму, но может есть у кого информация, можно ли заставить теслу заряжать его, на фото видно, что пороговое нормальное значение 12.73В а аккум сейчас 12,61В. Почему машина его не заряжает? АКБ 5 месяцев, до этого момента проблем не было…

    Спасибо понял 1 . Снимаю 12 в акума . 2 снимаю Клему под сидением на 5-10 минут при этом дери и капот открытым оставить . 3 подключить Клему под сиденем. И поставит 12 в акуму . Я правильно понял ?

    Как его снять подскажи ? Просто откручивать или нужно что то отключать ?

    Клемы снять и поменять, но нужно будет перед подключением 12В АКБ снять разъем под задним правым пассажирским сиденьем на 5-10 мин, после подключить его и затем подключать 12 в АКБ, только не закрывайте дверь и капот)

    Есть гипотеза, что аккумулятор меньше разряжается, когда включен sentry mode. В этом режиме машина не засыпает и контакторы от основной ВВБ всегда замкнуты. Я вот его почти не использовал и тоже аккумулятор умер через 8 месяцев. У вас как?

    Я начинающий еще теславод), что за режим не разбирался, если это охрана, то он стоял все время, но не помогло, мой аккум не умер, он держит 12,65 В и под нагрузкой не просидает, но 5 месяцев проблем не было

    Да это охрана. Не факт конечно, что при замкнутых контакторах идет зарядка 12в батареи, возможно там какой то свой алгоритм.

    Появились недавно на озоне, около 12 т. руб.

    Проблема появляется тупо каждый год на всех аккумух с наступлением холодов, в тупую…
    У меня тоже новюсенький Бош аккум и толку. что его менять? я не понимаю что делать, мне кажется лучше всего снять дозарядить вручную повыше и пройдёт проблема

    Проблема прошла и аккум под нагрузочный вилкой в норме, посмотри как будет)

    Ресет я тоже делал много раз, но опять появлялась проблема особенно с наступлением холодов

    Можно сбросить петлей. Но в целом через неделю ситуация повторится и всё равно будешь новый 12в аккум покупать.

    У меня тож где-то через пол года сдох новый 12в зубр.
    Сейчас взял самый свежий из возможных турецкий.

    Виной всему алгоритм заряда аккума теслы + жесткий алгоритм отбраковки.

    А что брать… Можно от обратного пойти. Точно не стоит ставить Zubr Asia. Точно не стоит ставить Exide EB454.

    Точно можно ставить родной Atlas ��.

    Замена АКБ 12V и проблемы из-за севшей АКБ 12V (а, возможно, и не из-за неё)

    Перезагрузка «петлёй» / Демонтаж АКБ 12V
    • Меню «Safety & Security» ➨ «Power Off».
    • Открыть капот, снять пластиковую накладку жабо (она на пистонах, просто тянуть).
    • Открутить ключом на 10 и снять минусовую клемму с АКБ 12V.
    • Отщёлкнуть защёлки крепления заднего сидения слева и справа.
    • Отключить разъём под задним сидением справа.
    • Подождать 10 минут.
    • Подключить разъём под задним сидением справа, подключить минусовую клемму.

    На первых двух видео советуют сначала отключать АКБ 12V, потом разъём под заднем сидением. На последнем — наоборот. Интересно, как всё-таки правильнее?

    Последние 3 месяца мы ездили на кабриолете Audi A5 — лето же, надо ловить момент — а Тесла стояла в гараже.
    Решили съездить в Ярославль, наконец, на ней.
    Прихожу в гараж, сажусь — показывает 28%, подношу ключ к тоннелю и вижу сообщение об ошибке BMS_a064 «Максимальный уровень заряда батареи снижен». Понял, что в Ярославль мы на ней не поедем, но решил всё же доехать до дома и зарядить на расположенной рядом зарядке — может, после зарядки глюк пройдёт.
    Пока ехал до зарядки вспомнил, какие это крутые ощущения, когда нажимаешь на ней педаль газа.
    Поставил заряжаться. Было 26%, прихожу через 4 часа — стало 30%.
    Попробовал начать зарядку снова — всё равно не заряжается.

    Доехал 300 метров до дома. Буквально когда парковался, вывалилась ещё куча ошибок по ESP, ABS и т. п.
    На следующий день она вообще отказалась ехать — как в прошлый раз.
    Пока плясал рядом и ходил домой за ключом на 10, чтобы отключить АКБ 12V и перезагрузить петлёй, машина выдала экран, что выключается. И выключилась.

    Открываю заднюю дверь, а стекло само опускается до низу и видно, что мотор стеклоподъёмника работает с большим трудом. Подняться стеклу пришлось помогать руками. Тут я немного успокоился, так как подумал, что это села АКБ 12V.

    Поехал пешком в гараж за Datsun mi-DO. Когда через 2 часа вернулся, двери уже перестали открываться. Хорошо, что я предусмотрительно не захлопнул багажник, и поэтому получилось перегрузить вещи.

    Через 4 дня мы вернулись, и нужно было что-то делать с машиной.

    Просто так заглушку вынуть не получилось. Силу прилагать было страшно, так как не хотел сломать её крепление. Нашел видео (выше скриншот из него).

    Один провод обмотан красной изолентой. Не очень похоже, что изолента с завода. Тем не менее, принять, что это плюсовой? Предохранителей на Model 3 нет, очень не хочется усугубить своё положение тем, что сожгу какой-нибудь электронный блок.
    Нашел совет. Для определения полярности проводов источника постоянного тока опустите два подключённых к нему провода в ёмкость с тёплой водой. После этого начнётся процесс электролиза воды: вокруг источника отрицательного заряда будет появляться пузыри газа (водорода).
    Опустил в мисочку с водой, вокруг минуса пошли пузырьки, хотя и очень слабые.
    Позднее я прочитал, что это провода не на всю электросистему машины, а только на замок капота. Который к тому же не откроется, если машина заряжена и закрыта. Тем не менее, не хотелось бы спалить и его. 😉 А пузырьки, интересно, мне привиделись? 😉

    В общем, соединил проводами для прикуривания АКБ Датсуна и проводки от Теслы.
    Минут 5 подождал, никаких изменений.
    Завёл Datsun — багажник сразу же открылся.
    Переключил провода на клеммы АКБ 12V Теслы. Она сразу же ожила и сказала, что готова ехать.

    Решил снять АКБ 12V и зарядить её.
    Гайку, которая держит планку АКБ, открутить не смог. Снял корыто, но ту самую гайку всё равно открутить не смог. Тогда пришлось приложить голову: чуть надавил на планку, и она снялась без откручивания! 😉

    Зарядил, утром поставил на место.
    Машина никаких ошибок не показала, и я довольный ушел.
    Вечером (через 10 часов) вернулся к машине. Уровень заряда упал с 26% до 16%, и появились ошибки.

    Видимо, машина днём как-то решила/поняла, что АКБ 12V плохая, поэтому не уснула и высадила 10% заряда за 10 часов. Думаю, ладно, поеду подзаряжусь. Доехал до зарядки, но заряжаться машина отказалась — сразу же пишет, что зарядка завершена.
    Пока АКБ 12V унёс заряжаться, завтра поеду покупать новую.

    Что непонятно
    • После отключения минусовой клеммы АКБ 12V, когда я залез в машину, чтобы отключить разъём под задним сидением, экран сам заработал. То есть он работает, даже когда не подключена АКБ 12V. Почему тогда машина выдаёт такой ворох ошибок, когда он разрядился, вместо того, чтобы тихо его зарядить?
    • Когда заряжается АКБ 12V? Только, когда машина стоит на зарядке? Тогда почему он не зарядился, когда я ставил машину на зарядку?
    • После подключения заряженной АКБ 12V были ошибки. Перезагрузил петлёй (подождав 10 минут), ошибки пропали.
    • Какие параметры АКБ 12V для Теслы? Я знаю, что лучше AGM, но хочу что-то бюджетнее.

    UPD
    Купил BOST 70B24L (ёмкость: 55 А·ч, пусковой ток: 480 А, полярность: обратная; тип корпуса: B24, Д236xШ128xВ220).
    Установил.
    Зарядил машину до 90%.
    Несколько ошибок всё-таки остались.

    Проехал 17 км, сходил по делам, вернулся в машину — все ошибки, кроме BMS_a064, пропали.
    Подсказали, что BMS_a064 — это разбалансировка основной батареи и посоветовали разрядить машину до 2—3%, а потом зарядить 5 Амперами до 100%. Выкатаю текущий заряд и попробую, если не будет других советов. Поскольку это займёт больше суток, наверное, буду делать в гараже.
