How to use WeChat Pay as a foreigner? (Full setup guide)
WeChat Pay is a digital wallet service from Chinese social media giant WeChat, which lets users make mobile payments and online transactions.
But if you’re in the US or a US tourist visiting China, you’ll want to know — can Americans pay with WeChat?
Read on to find out, in our guide to WeChat Pay for foreigners.

Can foreigners use WeChat to pay?
Yes, it is possible for users who aren’t Chinese citizens or permanent residents to use WeChat Pay.
However, you might need to download the international version of the app, and you’ll face restrictions unless you have a Chinese bank account. We’ll look at this in more detail shortly.
WeChat Pay is available in the US too. It was first launched for Chinese tourists visiting the US, but it’s now become a handy mobile payment option for expats and international students living here.
Not all stores and websites accept WeChat Pay as a payment method though. So you’ll need to look out for the WeChat Pay sign in store or at checkout, or enquire with the retailer directly.

Can you use WeChat Pay without a Chinese bank account?
Yes, you can use WeChat Pay without linking a Chinese bank account, simply by adding credit card details.
But there are some restrictions you should know about. WeChat Pay only accepts foreign credit cards, not debit cards. And you’ll only be able to use WeChat Pay in stores, not for sending money to friends and family.¹
How to set up WeChat Pay — a guide for foreigners
Now, let’s look at setting up WeChat Pay for foreigners.
The first step is to download the app and set up your account. Here’s how to get started:
- Go to the app store for your device (such as Google Play or the App Store) and download the WeChat app — look for the international version
- Open the app and tap the ‘Sign up’ button
- Provide your personal details when prompted
- Follow the on-screen steps to create your account.
Before you can use the money app, you’ll need to add a credit card (or a Chinese bank account if you have one) and verify your identity.
This requires providing identity documents (such as a passport), a photo of yourself and full personal details in order to prove that you are who you say you are.²
How do I link my foreign credit card to WeChat?
Here’s how to add your credit card to WeChat Pay:¹
- Open the WeChat Pay app
- Select ‘Me’ and then ‘Wallet’
- Tap ‘Bank card’ and then ‘Add new bank card’
- Enter your card information
- Follow the steps to verify the billing address, including entering an SMS verification code sent to your registered phone number.

Are you a traveler or expat wondering how to set up WeChat Wallet? Perhaps you’re frustrated by the process or you haven’t even started, but you know that WeChat is the preferred way to buy things in China. In this guide, I’m going to walk you through the WeChat Wallet set up process and troubleshoot why it may not be working for you.
For folks currently living or planning to move to China, WeChat is a great way to purchase meals, shop online and even send money to friends/family.
In order to use WeChat as a payment platform, though, you first need to set up what’s known as the WeChat Wallet. Opening a wallet allows you to receive money, send money and pay for items.
You would think that setting up the WeChat Wallet would be super-simple and easy to do, right?
…but unfortunately that’s not usually the case.
Here’s what we’re going to cover in this WeChat setup tutorial:

Below, I’m going to share everything you need to know to get set up with WeChat Wallet.
Can Anybody Open a WeChat Wallet?
The short answer is “yes, anyone can open a WeChat Wallet”, but…
…as with anything in China, it’s not that simple.
You see, WeChat requires what they call “real-name verification” in order to open a WeChat Wallet to send and receive money.
I figure they do this to prevent any sort of digital money-laundering or to comply with China’s surveillance of foreigners and its own people. Who knows.
This real-name verification can be completed in one of three ways:
- Chinese ID: If you have a Chinese ID card, you’re golden. Of course, if you’re reading this right now, my guess is that you don’t have that.
- Chinese Bank Card: If you’ve already opened a China bank account, the bank has given you a bank card. Entering this card acts as a real-name verification for WeChat.
- International Bank Card: Adding an international bank card is also supposed to act as a way for non-Chinese users to pass the real-name verification test (but, as you can guess, it doesn’t work).
Obviously, the last two options are more likely to be what works for you. I do want to warn you about a few things with using an international bank card, though.
First, based on my own failed experiences adding a foreign credit card to WeChat, it doesn’t always work. It’s not impossible (as the comments section of that article prove), but it doesn’t work for everybody.
Second, even if you are able to successfully add an international credit card to WeChat and open a WeChat Wallet, that doesn’t mean you’ll automatically be able to pay for things. It only means that you have a Wallet.
You can transfer money back and forth between friends and send red packets, but it’s almost impossible to use the international credit card to pay for things.
- If you’re an expat in China, I highly recommend you spend the time opening a China bank account that you can link to WeChat. This is by far the easiest way to set up WeChat Wallet and pay for things in China.
- If you’re a short-term visitor to China, I recommend you try to use an international credit card to open your WeChat Wallet and then use some creative methods to add money to your WeChat account.
The bottom line is that yes, everybody is supposed to be able to open a WeChat Wallet. The unfortunate reality, though, is that many foreigners are finding it extremely difficult, particularly short-term ones.

How to Link Your Local Bank Card to WeChat Wallet
Ok, now let’s move to some more practical advice. Let’s say that you’re in China and you already have a China bank card.
In this case, in order to open your WeChat Wallet, all you need to do is link your local bank card to your account.
Go ahead and open WeChat on your phone, find the “Me” section on the bottom and then tap “Wallet.”
From here, select “Cards,” which will direct you to the next screen where you can add your local bank card to your WeChat Wallet.
Afterward, enter your card number and general information. This includes your name, passport ID, phone number and other details specific to the card.
A couple things to remember so that your card syncs up correctly with WeChat Wallet are:
- Enter your name as it is listed on your bank account. Chinese always list their surnames first, so if you see any errors, try listing your last name first. I’ve also had the experience where my bank had my name on record in all capital letters, so I was required to enter all capitals in order for the card to be added to WeChat.
- When entering your passport number, tap “ID Type” to change it from ID Card to Passport. More than likely, you don’t have a Chinese ID card, so a passport is what you’ll be using here.
- Make sure you enter your phone number registered with your Chinese bank account and not your home phone number. WeChat will check with your bank to make sure that what you enter is what they have on record.
The last steps are to enter the verification code sent to your phone and set up your personal password to use when making purchases.
Using WeChat to Pay in China
After successfully linking your China bank card, you can start using WeChat Wallet immediately.
If you’ve linked your international banking card, your WeChat Wallet will be opened but you may not be able to immediately pay.
The easiest way to buy lunch or items in shops is to tap the money button within you wallet or on the home screen. In most cases, you’ll scan a vendor’s QR code to pay.
To send money to a friend or contact, you’ll enter into that contact’s chat and under the menu options find “Send Money”.
You’ll be prompted for the amount, you can choose how to pay (with a card or using your balance) and then easily send the money. It has to be accepted within a certain number of days or the money gets returned to you.
It is also possible to use other payment features within the WeChat Wallet including paying your phone bill, taxis and train tickets, as well as movie passes.
Final Thoughts | Setting Up WeChat Wallet
Remember, to set up WeChat Wallet for use, you first need to pass WeChat’s real-name verification.
Without that, you’re stuck.
For this reason, this payment method is often more convenient and useful to expats working in China instead of short-term visitors.
Should you have a Chinese bank account, WeChat Wallet will bring added convenience to your life when buying things as common as takeout, renting a bicycle, or paying your Internet bill.

I’ve finally got it all set up – It took a trip to my Chinese bank, and it took over an hour, but i can finally link my salary bank account to wepay ! a problem not covered by this article, that i don’t know the answer to, and even my Chinese friends didn’t know how to resolve is: if you try and purchase something from a foreign company (even one with a legit chinese banking partner like ‘epic games’, wechat will refuse to cooperate. It will tell you that this option is only available to people with chinese id cards (. ) obviously my passport is already linked to my wechat to enable any wepay activity at all in the first place. so it seems there is no way around this. the actual people most likely to make a foreign (non-chinese) purchase are foreigners, not chinese, so why require a chinese id card ?!

Now I have come across a problem with wechat and wechat pay: My old passport is expiring and I got a new passport which has a different passport no. chinese users do not have such problem, since their id no. never changes. so how to update the passport no.? i have already gone to the local bank of china branch to do the update. As for wechat pay i found one comment recommending as a first step to cancel wechat pay and then set it up again. but there is no reference to wechat itself. any input will be highly APPRECIATED.

Can I use Alipay and WeChat Pay in Singapore?
This is really two questions rolled into one. Firstly — do merchants in Singapore accept Alipay or WeChat Pay. And secondly, can Singaporean citizens and residents get an Alipay or WeChat Pay account. Let’s look at each point in turn.
Do merchants in Singapore accept payments through Alipay and WeChat Pay?
Singapore is moving towards a cash free future, with digital payments offered now in many stores, restaurants and even hawker centres. If mobile payments are available you’ll see the QR code displayed by the merchant, alongside a list of the payment platforms which can be used. There’s then just a simple, single QR code to scan in most cases — no matter which payment platform you want to use.³
Alipay and WeChat Pay are offered by some merchants in Singapore — especially in areas where Chinese residents and tourists may visit⁴. You’ll be able to see the logos of the payment platforms available alongside the QR code when you’re in a store, restaurant or food centre.
Can Singapore citizens and residents have an Alipay or WeChat Pay account?
Singapore citizens and residents can set up an Alipay account if they fulfil the eligibility requirements. All you’ll need to do is download the app, and set up an account. Link your preferred eligible card or bank account, including Visa, Mastercard and Diners Club cards, to start spending.
WeChat Pay can not be opened easily by Singaporeans. This feature is only available for WeChat customers in mainland China, Hong Kong and Malaysia.
How to top up Alipay in Singapore
You can top up your Alipay account by linking an eligible bank card or account, and then transferring funds over to your Alipay wallet. Here’s what you’ll need to do:
- Open the Alipay app
- Tap Bank cards, and then the + symbol
- Follow the prompts to add the card of your choice
- Complete the verification step
You’ll now be able to top up your Alipay account from the linked card, simply by following the prompts on screen and entering the amount you want to add to your Alipay balance. Once funds are in your account you’re free to spend and send however you want.
How to top up WeChat wallet in Singapore
If you have a WeChat Pay account registered with an eligible phone number, you can top up in Singapore from your linked local bank account or card in the country your WeChat account is registered in. You could also have friends who have WeChat accounts send you funds, which will be added to your balance for your spending.

Can I use WeChat Pay and Alipay as a Singaporean in China?
To pay anywhere in China WeChat Pay and Alipay are often the preferred method. That means that life may be easier when you visit China if you can get set up on one — or both — platforms.
Whether or not you’re able to use WeChat Pay and Alipay will depend on your personal circumstances.
It’s also worth noting that the functionality of platforms like Alipay and WeChat Pay is being developed constantly. Future updates may mean it’s much easier to create an account as a non-Chinese citizen.

At the time of writing it’s theoretically possible for Singaporeans to open both WeChat Pay and Alipay accounts. However, WeChat Pay can only be used by customers who register their account in Mainland China, Hong Kong or Malaysia — so you’re out of luck if your WeChat was set up here in Singapore.

How to set up WeChat Pay and Alipay : Step-by-step guide
The first step to get started with either WeChat Pay or Alipay is to download the latest version of the app. You’ll then find it’s relatively simple to follow the onscreen instructions to create your account. Here’s a runthrough of the basic steps required:
Alipay
- Once you have the app you’ll be prompted to enter your phone number.
- You’ll receive a confirmation code which you enter into the app, and then be asked to either set up a passcode or fingerprint for security
- Look for the Me button on the bottom right corner — this gives you access to your account information which you can edit and review.
- Tap Me and choose the option Add cards to add a linked bank card
- It’s useful to know that you’ll need to enter all your information in the exact same way it’s registered with your bank. That means using the same ID document you used when you opened your account, and spelling your name in the same way. If you run into problems you can ask your bank to help you get set up directly.
- Once your account and card are linked, you’re ready to start spending.
WeChat Pay
- If you don’t see the WeChat Pay option within your WeChat app then it’s probably because the phone number you’ve used to set up your WeChat account is not from a supported country.
- That said, if you do happen to have a Mainland China bank account, you may still be able to use WeChat Pay, but you’ll need to have a friend who already has WeChat Pay send you a transfer to get started. Once you have the transfer you will see the option to set up WeChat Pay, so the money can be added to your account.⁷ ⁸
- When you can see the WeChat Pay wallet icon, you’ll need to click through and link your mainland China bank account or debit card. This step is necessary because it’s a form of ID check. The account must be linked to your passport to allow for identity checking.
- Follow the prompts to add your bank details and eligible phone number. You’ll have to also get and enter a confirmation code which is sent to your phone.
- You should be good to go now — as with Alipay, if there are errors when you’re getting set up, it may mean that the name you’re entering is not exactly the same as the name the bank has in their records. Even small details like using capital letters or lower case can mean your account isn’t accepted. Visit your bank in person if you run into problems.
WeChat Pay vs. Alipay : Which one should I choose?
Both WeChat Pay and Alipay offer overlapping functionality, and where you find one platform accepted — you’ll often find the other is, too. That means that which one you choose is largely down to personal preference. WeChat Pay has the advantage of being embedded in WeChat, making it a social way to send and receive payments, shop in apps, or buy within WeChat. As an alternative, Alipay offers some buyer protections, which can be useful, depending on how you use your account.⁹
WeChat Pay isn’t usually available to Singapore based customers. Alipay on the other hand is available, and you can always get the Wise multi-currency account and linked card as an alternative to make SGD to CNY transfers with the mid-market exchange rate.
With huge numbers of active accounts already, and growing influence in the world of digital payments, both Alipay and WeChat Pay are here to stay.
